The average american plan

The Path to Financial Independence

How the Average American Can Win Financially

My name is Art De La Rosa, founder of Wealthy Dollar. For many years, I have dedicated my time to helping the average American make better financial decisions and build a stronger financial future.

If you want to buy life insurance, invest in stocks, purchase a home, obtain a loan, or acquire another financial product, there are many professionals available to help you. The challenge is that these professionals often focus primarily on the specific product or transaction you are considering rather than on your entire financial situation.

Because I have worked in several of these roles myself, I have seen firsthand how important it is to look beyond an individual transaction. A financial decision should make sense not only today, but also in relation to your debt, savings, cash flow, family responsibilities, future goals, and overall financial security.

Look at Your Entire Financial Picture

Consider this example.  Suppose you want to purchase a home. You have $10,000 in savings, but you also carry $5,500 in credit card debt at an 18% interest rate.

You may be able to qualify for and purchase the home. However, purchasing the home without considering your credit card debt, emergency savings, income stability, and other financial obligations could leave you financially vulnerable.

What happens if you unexpectedly lose your job?

You could suddenly find yourself responsible for a mortgage payment while still carrying high-interest credit card debt and having very little money available for emergencies. The financial stress on you and your family could increase dramatically.

History has shown us why financial preparation matters. During the 2008 financial crisis, home values dropped significantly, and millions of Americans faced serious financial challenges. Many homeowners held risky mortgages, and when jobs disappeared or mortgage payments rose, families found themselves without enough savings or income to meet their obligations.

The lesson is simple: one financial decision can affect every other part of your financial life.

Managing Your Money Is the Foundation

Managing your money effectively is one of the keys to financial success.

Financial setbacks can happen at any time. A job loss, reduction in income, medical emergency, recession, unexpected repair, or family crisis can quickly change your financial situation.

The COVID-19 pandemic provided another powerful reminder of this reality. Millions of Americans suddenly experienced job losses, reduced hours, lower income, and uncertainty about their financial futures.

Situations like these demonstrate why your financial plan should not be based entirely on the assumption that everything will continue to go perfectly.   You need flexibility.  You need savings.  You need manageable debt.  And most importantly, you need a plan.

Your Financial Goals Should Guide Your Decisions

At Wealthy Dollar, our goal is not simply to help wealthy individuals become wealthier.

We want to help everyday individuals and families become financially savvy, regardless of where they are starting.

That may mean learning how to save money every day, eliminate debt, prepare to purchase a home, protect your family, prepare for retirement, or simply gain greater control over your monthly cash flow.

Your financial goals should be clearly defined because those goals should help guide your everyday financial decisions.

A good financial plan should consider:

Your spending behavior

Your values and priorities

Your current cash flow

Your assets and liabilities

Your employment and income outlook

Your short-term financial needs

Your long-term personal and financial goals

Once these areas are understood, you can begin making financial decisions based on your complete situation rather than reacting to individual expenses or opportunities as they appear.

Small Daily Decisions Can Become Big Numbers

I developed a money-management approach to help people evaluate their financial decisions daily.  I also wrote Wealth Grows When Your Cash Flows to help individuals better understand their money and personalize their own financial plan.

The idea is simple: the decisions you make today affect the financial life you experience tomorrow.

The better your daily decisions become, the more financially savvy you become.

Remember:

It is not only about how much money you make. It is also about how much money you keep.

Small expenses can add up to surprisingly large amounts of money over time.  For example, consider spending $27.50 every day.  Over one year, that equals approximately $10,037.50. Continue that spending pattern for ten years, and you will have spent approximately $100,375.

Now ask yourself an important question:

What difference could $100,000 make in your financial life if some of that money had instead been saved, invested, used to eliminate debt, or directed toward one of your most important goals?

This does not mean you should never spend money or enjoy your life. It means you should understand where your money is going and determine whether those decisions match your priorities.

“Is the way I am using my money today helping me move closer to my goals?”

Developing this habit can gradually change the way you think about money.

Financial success is rarely achieved by a single dramatic decision. More often, it is built through hundreds or thousands of small decisions made consistently over time.

Learn From the Past, but Focus on Today

Everyone has made financial mistakes.  Perhaps you spent too much money, accumulated debt, waited too long to save, purchased something you later regretted, or simply did not have enough financial knowledge at the time.  You cannot change yesterday.  But you can learn from it.

Use your previous experiences to help you make better decisions today.  Every dollar you control represents an opportunity.  Whether the amount is $5, $50, $500, or $5,000, your goal should be to use your resources intentionally.  You do not have unlimited money, time, or energy. Learning how to maximize the resources you have can make an enormous difference over the course of your life.

Faith Is Also Part of My Financial Journey

My financial philosophy is also connected to my faith.

I believe that working hard, developing financial knowledge, setting goals, and making wise decisions are important. But I also believe that trusting God can provide an even stronger foundation for your life.

Life will always include uncertainty and adversity.

There will be times when you may feel anxious, discouraged, or unsure about what to do next.

During those moments, prayer can help provide perspective, hope, peace, and confidence.

I believe God is involved in our daily lives more than we sometimes realize. Building a strong spiritual foundation can help us face challenges that may otherwise seem overwhelming.

Pray every day.

Set your personal and financial goals.  Use your resources wisely.  Continue learning.  Continue moving forward.  And trust God with the things you cannot control.

Start Today

Financial improvement does not require perfection.  It requires awareness, discipline, persistence, and a willingness to consistently make better decisions.  Begin with five minutes of planning today.  Here is the 5-Minute Financial Strategy to follow.

Review your finances.  Identify one area you can improve.  Set one meaningful goal.

Then take one action that moves you closer to it.  Over time, those small actions can create major changes.

Take control of your money. Take control of your future. And continue building the financial and spiritual foundation you want for yourself and your family.
